Take a look inside Lindy: an apartment in mid-century modern style

Lindy (29), storyteller for Het Nationale Theater in The Hague. Bought an apartment in Rotterdam 5 years ago and renovated every centimeter in recent years. Today she lives in her dream apartment in mid-century modern style

This month we have an inside view in Rotterdam. We were allowed to take a look at Lindy Kuit's apartment.

Lindy was born near Rotterdam. As soon as she was old enough she moved to Rotterdam itself. The city has always attracted her: “Because of its size, water and modern architecture, but also its history, mentality and raw edges. It's a real city with real people.”

She studied art and architectural history and now works as a storyteller & campaign manager at The National Theater in The Hague.

Lindy's living story

She started working full time at 24 and soon decided she wanted an apartment for herself; 5 years ago, buying a house was still affordable. At the top of Lindy's wish list was the Blijdorp district: a green and quiet 1930s neighborhood in the north of the city.

After a second viewing, it was already a hit: nice apartment, perfect location, balcony on the southwest... Only a lot of renovation work had to be done on the apartment. Over the years, she has tackled every square inch of the apartment: “All walls have been re-plastered, all wood has been repainted, a new kitchen and a new bathroom have been installed…” . It even lacked central heating. She did make a nice discovery during the renovation work: “I discovered a beautiful oak floor under the gray laminate floor of the previous occupant. I had it sanded and whitewashed. It really makes the house what it is, it creaks so nicely under your feet when you get out of bed on a Sunday morning”.

Lindy's living style

Lindy has decorated her apartment herself. She loves trends such as mid-century modern and space age. You can immediately see these styles in her interior. She finds inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest.

Her own interior is constantly changing: “I started with relatively little furniture and collected items over the years. Sometimes something comes in, and sometimes something goes out.”

She has another good tip for anyone who is about to furnish a new home: “Decorate slowly. Give yourself time to find really nice things. This way you avoid cluttering your house with only Ikea and Karwei furniture that you are tired of after a few months.”

Eye-catchers & favorite spots

One of Lindy's favorite places in her apartment is her bathroom. She made it a bit bigger by involving part of the hallway. In addition, you can often find Lindy in her reading spot in the corner of the living room: "That armchair is not only very beautiful, but it is also very comfortable."

The eye-catchers of her interior? “My Oskar dresser naturally! And my Alky chair, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Castelli in the 1970s. I found the armchair with somewhat worn dark gray upholstery via Catawiki and had it reupholstered by MaartWerk Stoffering in Schiedam in beautiful, red-brown velvet.”

A little Furnified in the house

The Oskar sideboard from Furnified was one of the first pieces of furniture Lindy purchased. “The model is timeless and I loved that I could choose the legs underneath myself.” Next year, Lindy will move out of the apartment, together with her boyfriend she has bought something new: “We are going to live in the Zuiderziekenhuis in Rotterdam South, a monumental hospital from the thirties. The renovation will take a while, but in my head I have already decorated every centimeter. Oskar will definitely get a spot!”
